To avoid certain fundamental misunderstandings, one could read the
brief foreword (click here) before proceeding to the illustrated narrative
that starts below. The narrative below (title above) is a revised and expanded version
of an unillustrated piece originally published in the Hawthorn Press anthology Free,
Equal and Mutual. Many of the images that have been added to illustrate the piece are of
paintings done by artists working at the time of the events. The writer of this history also
made some of the images (those under which no artist's name is shown). In a few cases he made images
from scratch, but in most cases he worked with graphic arts software in an attempt to turn photos into another
kind of art or, failing that, at least into something chromatically diverting. As to any shortcomings, the writer  
pleads guilty, but Rudolf Steiner should be presumed innocent. For info on the writer, click here.
